Monticello is a small but beautiful city located in northwestern Indiana. It is located about 100 miles south of Chicago, Illinois and about 90 miles north of Indianapolis. Monticello is positioned in White County and serves as the seat of government. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were about 5,200 people living in Monticello in 2016.
Native American Indians were the original inhabitants of the area Monticello is located in. By the mid-1800s, the first European-American settlers arrived in the area. The rich soil of the land attracted settlers from Virginia, New York, Kentucky, and Ohio. In 1834, the Indiana legislature created a new county. County Commissioners selected a location for the county seat. These individuals named the site Monticello in honor of President Thomas Jefferson’s home.
Modern-day Monticello is a beautiful, developed city that is home to excellent amenities, facilities, and friendly people. The city is located a short distance from several attractions including Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman. These lakes provide Monticello residents relaxation and activities including boating, fishing, and cruises. Located in Monticello are many locally owned restaurants that offer a variety of cuisine options for all types of budgets.
