Located in northern Indiana is a small Midwestern city named Peru. The city is located about 60 miles north of Fort Wayne, Indiana and about 80 miles north of Indianapolis. It is positioned in Miami County and serves as the county seat. Peru is also the largest city in Miami County. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 11,061 people lived in Peru in 2016.
Peru is located in an area that was originally inhabited by Native American Indians, most likely of the Potawatomi Tribe. It is the only incorporated city in Miami County. The first European-American to settle on the site of present-day Peru was John McGregor. Peru has developed significantly since its humble beginnings as a one cabin settlement.
